Library plans programs in December

HARVARD – Harvard Diggins Library will host a program on holiday crafting and a presentation on poor farms during December.

• Holidays Craft Workshop: Don Dow of Harvard will present craft and floral ideas for the holiday season from 1 to 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at the library, 900 E. McKinley St.

The program is free and open to the public.

Dow is floral artist and crafter and will display items he created based on the shape of a circle.

There also will be a workshop to make a Noel Plaque from 2 to 4 p.m. after the presentation. The first 10 who sign up at the library will make the plaque from materials Dow will supply. All others are invited to watch the presentation and workshop, receive free project guides and enter a raffle.

To register for the workshop, visit the library or call 815-943-4671.

Registration is not required for the 1 p.m. presentation.

• Poorhouses and Poor Farms In Illinois: Dr. Rochelle Lurie, owner and president of Midwest Archaeological Research Services Inc. will present a program on “Poorhouses and Poor Farms” at 6 p.m. Dec. 4.

She will draw on work done at the Cook County Poor Farm in Cook County, Oak Forest, and will provide comments on other county Poor Farms, as well.

Poorhouses and Poor Farms were institutions that housed the impoverished poor and elderly.

Although living conditions and care in most 19th century institutions were very poor and considered “places of last resort,” the Poor Farm at Oak Forest, established in 1910, was designed to be a model of such places for the rest of the country.

This event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.

Refreshments will be served.
