Chief: Lakemoor police officer found dead in home

A longtime Lakemoor police officer was found dead Wednesday morning in his Carol Stream home, according to the DuPage County Coroner’s Office.

Tom Schaffer, 52, was scheduled to work at 7 a.m. in Lakemoor but he didn’t show up for work, Lakemoor police Chief David Godlewski said. Officers then called the Carol Stream Police Department and asked whether they could check his home.

Schaffer was later found dead in a bedroom, Godlewski said.

“It was very unlike him not to show up for work, so we were worried,” Godlewski said.

Schaffer had been a police officer in Lakemoor since 2001.

“He was an immediately likeable guy,” said Godlewski, who took over as chief in September. “He knew how to treat people, and whatever I asked him to do, he did it with a smile on his face.”

Preliminary indications showed that he died of natural causes, according to the DuPage County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

Members of the Carol Stream Police Department could not be reached for comment.
