Today marks the third annual Small Business Saturday, a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country.
In 2011, more than 2.7 million Facebook users, 230 public and private organizations, 75 corporations and elected officials in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., declared their support for Small Business Saturday.
Last year, more than 500,000 small-business owners leveraged an online tool or promotional materials for Small Business Saturday, and 15,000 businesses signed up for free Facebook advertising to promote their products and services in the run-up to Small Business Saturday.
Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce of Commerce President Gary Reece said those who spend most of their money at big-box stores should give small, local businesses a second look.
“A lot of times a small
business can compete” on prices, Reece said. “Plus, small businesses have unique items and they’re run by people who live right next door to you.
“You see local business owners at kids’ sports and community events, at church. You run into them all the time. Small-business owners take part in the community. Supporting them is good all the way around.”
Reece noted that 68 cents of every dollar spent in a local small business stays local.
“Shop local,” Reece said.
