Fifth grader raises money for Sandy victims
Westwood Elementary students raised about $700 for Hurricane Sandy relief during an effort dreamed up by a fifth grader.
Tyler Waterson decided he wanted to help after he chose to read about the widespread devastation caused by the hurricane during a non-fiction reading assignment, according to a news release from District 200.
The school helped Waterson develop a "Sock Away Your Extra Change" initiative in which students brought in socks filled with change.
Westwood raised $696 for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund through the campaign, the release said.
The money, which Waterson presented to a Red Cross representative Wednesday, will go to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.
