Immigrant license idea

To the Editor:

Let me get this straight. Our governor and other prominent politicians are contemplating a law to grant illegal immigrants the opportunity to obtain an Illinois driver’s license. They claim that their reasoning is there will be fewer uninsured drivers on the road, since they can acquire insurance more readily if they are licensed.

Who are they kidding? This is just a ploy to cater to the growing bloc of Mexican voters. And last I heard, you have to be a citizen to vote.

There is an already viable option to immigrants (legal or illegal). It is called an International Driver’s License. It is available to people with valid licenses in their country of origin for periods up to a year. Frequent travelers use them, and they are quite reasonable in cost.

Why should the government waste their time and our tax money to help aliens skirt our laws when a solution is already there? Seems to me a bit of political posturing at our expense. It’s like giving them bread and having to butter it too.

One last thought. When talking about illegal immigration, what part of illegal don’t they understand?
