Medcor continues trek towards wellness

McHENRY – Medcor associates continued their trek towards wellness this month – this time participating in 10k events around the globe.

Medcor, headquartered in McHenry, is a national health-care solutions company, providing onsite health and wellness clinics and 24/7 telephonic nurse triage services at more than 100,000 work sites in the U.S. and its territories.

Medcor’s wellness committee challenged employees to complete a 10k or 10-mile race earlier this month. Approximately 110 employees, family and friends rose to the occasion walking, jogging, running, swimming, biking or cross-country skiing their way to the finish line.

Dr. Luanne Freer, Medcor’s medical director at Yellowstone National Park, helped champion the event, similar to the “Trek to Everest” walking event the Medcor Wellness Program launched in April of this year. Medcor provides medical services at the three health clinics at Yellowstone National Park, caring for park employees as well as park visitors.

“I was looking for a way to build on the momentum of our Trek to Everest last spring and connect with our associates at headquarters,” Freer said. “I wanted for all of us to gather at a central event, so we found Chicago’s Perfect 10 race. Then something really inspiring and wonderful happened – folks who couldn’t come to the Chicago race made their own races and shared photos or stories of their events. The collective inspires me to keep active and I hope it does the same for others.”

In April, 54 employees of the McHenry-based company participated in a “Trek to Everest” walking program, walking virtually in tandem with Freer as she climbed Mt. Everest to set up an ER clinic at a base camp. The event lasted nine days, long enough for employees to log nearly 4 million steps, or 1,936 miles.

About 30 Medcor associates, friends and family members entered Chicago’s Perfect 10 event. The remaining participants responded by gathering groups together or trekking solo throughout their hometowns – including participants as far as Afghanistan and Gambia. On average, each employee logged more than 25,000 steps during their race day – making a total of nearly 3 million steps, or 1,343 miles.

In the U.S., Medcor teams trekked across areas in Illinois, Wisconsin, Washington, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Texas, Arizona, Florida, and Tennessee.

“The pictures that poured in from different locations created a spark of excitement and connection,” said Heather Klaus, Medcor’s Wellness Program director. “Many folks are looking for their next event. Medcor’s Better Me program is focused on creating an atmosphere of wellness, and when participants translate workplace wellness into their daily lives, everyone is headed in the right direction!”

Medcor launched its company-wide Better Me in January. The program is focused on creating an atmosphere of wellness through movement, nutrition and maintaining a successful work-life balance.

“I am thrilled that our wellness program, truly still in its beginnings, has created such a strong sense of spirit and commitment to great health within our organization,” said Dr. Anne Nagle, Medcor’s associate medical director and head of the walking program. “We see it across the board: from our leadership team and board members to our associates who work in remote areas of the U.S. It has been extremely rewarding to see these individuals make a commitment to improving their lives and health by setting goals and making simple changes in their day-to-day lifestyles."
