Hazing, sexual assault claims at Ill. high school

CHICAGO (AP) — Three more students have joined a lawsuit alleging hazing and sexual assault within the sports program of a suburban Chicago high school.

Three members of the soccer team at Maine West High School in Des Plaines joined a complaint filed last week on behalf of a 14-year-old student who says he was attacked in September by older members of the team who tore off his underwear, grabbed his genitals and sodomized him with objects.

The lawsuit alleges abuses were "part of the soccer team's culture" and were "sanctioned by its coaches for years."

Des Plaines police charged six students as juveniles with misdemeanor battery and hazing after the September attack, and 10 students were disciplined.

School officials say they've sent a message that they'll act to stop bullying and hazing.
