Ill. road deaths drop 63 percent over Thanksgiving
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Traffic deaths in Illinois were down nearly 63 percent over the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend compared with last year.
The Illinois Department of Transportation credits good road conditions over the four-day weekend as well as its Drive to Survive traffic safety campaign.
There were two crashes and three deaths over the weekend. Last year, there were seven crashes and eight fatalities.
Illinois State Police and other law enforcement agencies were out over Thanksgiving weekend to enforce seat belt and DUI laws.
State Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider says seatbelt usage is at a record high in Illinois and annual traffic fatalities are on track to be under 1,000 for the fourth consecutive year.
