Chicago policeman charged in hit-and-run

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago policeman has been charged in a hit-and-run that seriously injured a bicyclist.

Michael Bergeson is accused of hitting the cyclist in his personal vehicle while off-duty on Aug. 3. The victim suffered a head wound and was left unconscious.

The 33-year-old officer faces felony charges including leaving the scene of an accident.

The Cook County State's Attorney's office alleges Bergeson initially stopped and called 911 to report the woman was injured, but fled as an ambulance was arriving.

Prosecutors say he struck parked cars while fleeing, leaving his license plate behind.

He's also accused of filing a traffic crash report on the incident two days later in which he falsely claimed the cyclist ignored a stop sign.

Bergeson did not respond to a voicemail seeking comment.
