Halfpenny to speak at Green Drinks gathering

CRYSTAL LAKE – The public is invited to Green Drinks McHenry County from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Duke’s Alehouse & Kitchen, 110 N. Main St.

Dr. Jim Halfpenny from Gardiner, Mont., will present “The Last Cold.” Halfpenny was most recently in the Arctic in August and will share information on how this region is being affected by climate change.

Halfpenny’s 40-plus year career has included stints with the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, and has taken him to both polar regions and the high mountains around the world.

Halfpenny recently returned from leading his students to Ellesmere and Greenland Islands, and studying the polar bears of the Hudson Bay region in Canada.

He has written more than 25 books and videos, including “Yellowstone Bears in the Wild,” “Track Plates for Mammals” and “Tracking Wolves: The Basics.” He led the American East Greenland expeditions in 1975 and 1976, and is a fellow of the Explorers Club and received the Antarctic Service medal. He is past chairman of the board of directors, senior instructor and administrative liaison officer of the National Outdoor Leadership School. He is president of A Naturalist’s World, an ecological education company.

There will be an information table set up at the gathering Wednesday, and attendees are welcome to bring information about green products and services to share.

Additional parking is available at the train station.
