Mayor, council spots are uncontested in Woodstock

WOODSTOCK – Four positions up for election. Only four petitions filed.

Woodstock won’t see a contested election this spring.

Joe Starzynski, the only non-incumbent to file a petition, will fill the City Council seat left by departing Councilman Dick Ahrens.

Mayor Brian Sager and Councilman Mike Turner and RB Thompson each filed a petition and will run unopposed.

The deadline to file was Monday.

Ahrens is completing his second term. He said he felt it was time to step back to allow for fresh ideas.

“I’m a firm believer that you need to come into this with a vision and a goal and ideas on what you think are the best things to do for the people and community of Woodstock,” Ahrens said. “I kind of looked at this as term limits are maybe a good thing.”

Ahrens said he’s proud of what the council has achieved in the past eight years, specifically with regards to fiscal responsibility and economic development. Chains such as Wal-Mart, Kohl’s, Office Depot and Panera Bread have brought stores to Woodstock in recent years.

Ahrens said he’s hopeful for the city’s future and believes he’s leaving the council in capable hands.

“I have a tremendous amount of confidence for the folks that are on council and for the folks that have chosen to run again,” Ahrens said. “[Starzynski] is very community-minded, very active, and I think he’ll do a great job for the people of Woodstock as well.”

Starzynski, a mortgage consultant who has lived in Woodstock since 1991, also serves on the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, the Woodstock Noon Rotary Club and the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission.

“Over time, I became more and more involved in the community,” said Starzynski, 53, who ran unsuccessfully for the council in 2011. “I’ve developed a lot of friends and colleagues, and I feel like the community is part of me now.”
