Violent start to Chicago weekend claims 6 lives

CHICAGO (AP) — Shootings and other violence have killed six people and wounded 10 in Chicago overnight.

Authorities say five of them were shot to death and another was fatally stabbed.

In the first of the night's shootings, gunmen emerged from a vacant lot and fired at a group of men on a porch on the city's South Side, killing a Springfield man and wounding three other men.

Neighbors told the Chicago-Sun Times that the man killed in that shooting had been sitting on a couch inside the home and was struck by bullets that passed through a window.

The knife attack occurred in the Lawndale neighborhood on the city's West Side. The victim was stabbed in the chest.

Among those wounded by gunfire were a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy.
