Jury selection begins in Beavers' tax trial
CHICAGO (AP) — Potential jurors have started filling out questionnaires in the trial of an influential Cook County commissioner accused of tax evasion.
William Beavers' you-can't-touch-me bravado will be put to the test this week with the start of his trial in Chicago. Potential jurors started filling out paperwork Monday and they'll later be questioned one by one. Opening statements could happen Tuesday.
The combative 77-year-old Beavers has denied diverting money from his campaign funds without reporting it. He accuses prosecutors of vindictiveness.
