Man found with nearly $300K in marijuana

CRYSTAL LAKE – A California man was found with about $290,000 worth of marijuana in his van, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Michael P. Karavastev, 38, of Sunnyvale, Calif., was stopped about 10:40 a.m. at Route 31 and Route 14 in his 2011 Mercedes Sprinter van in connection with improper lane use as he was trying to turn north from Route 14 onto Route 31, Sgt. Mike Muraski said.

A deputy saw that Karavastev was acting nervous, Muraski said.

A K-9 was brought to the scene and indicated the presence of narcotics in the vehicle, the sheriff's office said. Deputies found eight shipment boxes containing numerous packages of marijuana.

There were about 75 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value of $290,000 in the van, the sheriff's office said.

Karavastev was charged with marijuana trafficking, unlawful possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver, and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Karavastev was being held Monday in the McHenry County Jail waiting for bond to be set.
