McHenry library seeks candidates for April election
McHENRY – Three board seats for the McHenry library district are up for election this spring.
Incumbents Paul Antens and Delphine Grala are running for re-election to the McHenry Public Library District Board.
Karen Doran, who has been on the library board for nearly 15 years, is not seeking another term in the April 9 consolidated election.
The library board’s responsibilities include setting library policies and annual budgets, developing a long-range plan, securing funding, overseeing facility maintenance issues and holding regular meetings once a month.
Candidates for McHenry Public Library Board must be registered voters and reside in the library’s district. Candidacy filing information can be picked up at the library’s front desk, 809 N. Front St.
The packet includes a statement of candidacy and a petition form that must be signed by 50 district residents.
The submission deadline for candidacy forms is 3 p.m. Dec. 26. Forms should be addressed to Jim Scholtz, library executive director. For information, call Scholtz at 815-385-0036.
The library has about 20,000 cardholders out of the district’s 40,000 residents, said Kathy Lambert, public relations manager for the library.
“We’ve slowly been growing,” she said. “We updated our library cards and saw a spike in the number of patrons we serve.”
Beginning in late 2009, board officials began planning to expand and renovate the library facility after a referendum for a new building failed. The renovation project was completed in September 2010.
Library officials encourage those interested in serving on the board to step up for the upcoming election.
“We feel that candidates should be a library supporter, obviously,” Lambert said. “Supporting the library in the community is a good way to volunteer in your community and it doesn’t really require previous experience.”
How to get involved
Those interested in running for the board must live within the district and be registered to vote.
Candidacy filings are due at 3 p.m. Dec. 26.
