Volunteers needed at TLC work sites

WOODSTOCK – The Land Conservancy of McHenry County has three volunteer events planned this week.

Volunteers are needed to help cut and stack brush to help restore these sites:

• Sobczak Conservation Area: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

Retired teachers Marty and Lynne Sobczak have done a lot of work to care for the land they call home in Greenwood. A few years ago, they decided to permanently preserve it by working with TLC. The site includes a portion of Nippersink Creek and part of the only remaining lily pond along the creek. To get there, take Greenwood Road north from Woodstock to Wondermere Road. Take a right, and look for 9310 Wondermere on the left.

• Windy Knoll: 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Workdays are every second Saturday of the month until March. The work involves clearing a high-quality wetland of invasive brush and the small willows that have grown up in the absence of fire. The site is between Crystal Lake and McHenry in the Windy Knoll subdivision off Crystal Lake Road. To get there, turn on Coachlight Road (west), take the first right on Blue Pine Drive, then turn on the first left on Sweet Bay Drive. Park on the side of the road.

• Waichunas Conservation Area: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

This woodland was brushed out a couple of years ago, but it’s time to go back and get all the resprouting brush and new growth. This area was planted with hazelnut and ninebark shrubs, and there are many baby oaks everywhere, so the hard work that was put in is making a difference. To get there from the intersection of River Road and Dowell Road north of Island Lake, turn onto Dowell and then right on South Thomas Court. Park along South Thomas Court, and the group will walk in from there.

No experience is necessary. Tools will be provided. Volunteers should wear work shoes and clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty.
