Larimer family thanks

To the Editor:

The death of my nephew, John Larimer, in the Aurora, Colo., theater shootings has been met with extraordinary kindness and generosity by the people in the Crystal Lake area.

From the motorcycle group Warriors Watch, the Illinois Old Guard and Patriot Guard that escorted his body from the airport to the funeral home all the way through to the funeral lunch at Jameson’s, people reached out to our family and offered whatever they had to give.

The Navy took care of the casket and getting John’s body home, escorted on the flight by two of his friends and co-workers (who were also with him in the theater that fateful night), as well as packing up his apartment and shipping his belongings and car home.

Air Compassion for Veterans and American Airlines flew family in from out of town for the wake and funeral at no cost. Davenport Funeral Home only charged their out-of-pocket expenses. Galloway Subs, Jersey Mike’s Subs and Dilly’s Restaurant in Spring Grove delivered food to Davenport’s, unasked, with no fanfare. Jameson’s Charhouse put on a lovely luncheon after the funeral at no cost for about 150 to 200 people. The list goes on and on. Forgive me for not listing everyone.

That week is still a blur to me, with the only part sharply defined being the pain we were suffering. It meant a lot that people lined the streets, saluting or holding hands over their hearts, police standing at attention between the airport and funeral home, and again between the funeral home and the cemetery a few days later.

Thank you to everyone who came to the wake or funeral to express their sorrow at losing a young man with so much promise and so much to offer the world. Thank you, everyone, for your kindness and generosity.

The Larimer family and John’s Aunt Karen, Karen M. Lavin
