Generous donations

To the Editor:

As commander of Crystal Lake VFW Memorial Post 12014, I would like to thank everyone who generously donated to our poppy drive this Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 10 and 11.

I also would like to thank the Jewel stores in Crystal Lake and Cary for letting us sell the poppies there on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The enthusiastic support we received is deeply appreciated.

The money that we collect is used to support veterans and community projects. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, we deliver a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner to less fortunate veterans in McHenry County. We also arrange for veterans serving their country to call home to their families.

We go to Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center In North Chicago and play bingo with the  veterans. We support the National Home In Michigan, which helps veterans and their families who have fallen on hard times. These veteran families are able to live there and receive education through the VFW, similar to Mooseheart In Saint Charles.

We also work with the Veterans Assistance Commission in Woodstock to help veterans in filling disability and assistance claims. Our post also has sent care packages to our troops in Afghanistan.

Without your generous donations, we could not support these worthy activities. May God continue to bless the United States of America and to protect those in harm’s way.

Jack McIntyre

Commander VFW Memorial Post 12014, Crystal Lake
