Amazing Santa run

To the Editor:

The first annual Crystal Lake Kiwanis Club’s Santa Run for Kids was an amazing and inspiring experience on Dec. 2. The club would like to thank everyone who participated, volunteered and came out to support the event. An especially big “thank you” goes to Mike Splitt, who suggested the idea and led the committee to a very successful result!

At 9 a.m. Sunday, more than 700 participants lined up on Williams Street dressed in either a Santa suit to run or walk the 5k or wore antlers for the 1-mile event. The weather was better than we could have asked for December, and the turnout was higher than estimated. The festive atmosphere, excitement and apprehension was a joy to experience!

The participants in the race were from all age groups, and we even had several dogs joining us! There were children in strollers, toddlers and teens walking and running, and even some participants over the age of 70! It was a fantastic family-friendly activity.

The proceeds from the event will go to some great nonprofit agencies that partnered with us – Big Brothers Big Sisters, Girls on the Run NWIL, CASA, The Light Center/Main Stay, and Turning Point.

The Kiwanis Club hopes to see you at one of our upcoming events or on our list of volunteers, participants, donors or even as a member! You can find out more at www.kiwaniscrystallake.com.

Don’t forget to save the date – Santa Run 2013 will be on Dec. 1 next year!
