Garbage ordeal

To the Editor:

This is in response to John McHugh’s letter, “Cary garbage tax” (Dec. 7).

My parents (who were in their 70s) went through the same ordeal in Lake Zurich. They lived there for almost 15 years. Mom no longer cooked (they ate out every meal).

The only garbage they had was from the junk mail and occasional snack wrappers. Their weekly garbage fit into a small store bag, which was thrown out when they were shopping! I called the refuse service when they moved in and explained this. Didn’t matter, they said, every resident pays for garbage pickup (but they did get a senior rate – big deal)!

For 15 years I wrote out a check for a service they never used. Mom was gone for eight of those years, so it was just dad by himself. Oh, his daily newspaper? He took that to the bowling alley with him and left it for others to read. I was furious for a while, but then just let it go. Nothing else you could do!
