CRYSTAL LAKE – If you stopped by the Crystal Lake Jewel-Osco before work to grab one last box of Twinkies, you were probably too late.
Chicago-area Jewel-Oscos were expected to have the last shipment of Hostess products in the country Tuesday, and the Crystal Lake location sold out by 7 a.m.
Hostess announced in November that the company would be winding down operations due to an inflated cost structure that put the company at a “profound competitive disadvantage,” according to a news release.
A nationwide strike in November by the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco and Grain Millers Union “crippled its operations at a time when the company lacked the financial resources to survive a significant labor action,” the release said.
The shutdown will cause the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers and 570 bakery outlet stores, and Hostess will eliminate 18,500 jobs.
Crystal Lake Jewel employees declined to be interviewed for this story, but two workers confirmed that a shipment of Twinkies arrived at 5 a.m. and was gone by 7 a.m.
