More torpedoes

To the Editor:

Taxpayers of McHenry County, it is time to stand up and be counted!

McHenry County College is looking for a 9.9 percent increase in its levy and a $45 million bond sale for a health club. We all know the bond payoff will not come from tuition. We, the taxpayers, will be hit for the repayment of the bonds and 9.9 percent increase. If we show up at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 20 at MCC and voice our opinions, maybe we can get the board’s attention. This is wishful thinking, since the board obviously is living under a rock.

In the same issue of the Northwest Herald that printed MCC’s levy notice, there was an article from District 47 indicating they may close a school, or maybe two, because of declining enrollment. If District 47 has declining enrollment, I am sure the rest of the schools in the county also have fewer students. If the MCC board would crawl out from under that rock, they may see what is going on around them. They apparently live by the axiom – don’t confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up.

The board is like Admiral David Farragut, who is paraphrased as saying, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” We, the taxpayers, must throw out more torpedoes!
