LITH plans to burn invasive plants today

LAKE IN THE HILLS – The village has scheduled a prescribed burn for today at the Meadowbrook Wetland west of Haligus Road on Miller Road.

V3 Companies will perform the burn as part of maintenance of the area.

During the burn, residents should keep pets inside and keep windows closed. Workers will make every effort to prevent drifting smoke, the village said in a news release.

Prescribed burns reduce the amount of pesticides needed to control invasive plants. Fire helps promote species diversity by controlling invasive woody shrubs and trees, the village said.

Fire burns away dead vegetation and stimulates new plant growth by allowing sunlight to warm the dark soil, which encourages germination.

Depending on the weather, the burn may be rescheduled for next week. Residents with questions should contact the Village Public Works Department at 847-960-7500 or go to www.lith.org.
