On Nov. 29, the Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Chamber of Commerce completed its annual Board of Directors retreat. The objective was to develop a strategic plan both long term and for 2013 that will provide a framework for the board, committees and staff in leadership, growth and program development. It will be through this plan that we continue to adapt to meet the needs of our members and the community.
During the retreat, our mission was referenced numerous times: To promote and support the prosperity and development of the local business community and to enhance the quality of life in our communities. As we reviewed the diverse portfolio of benefits, services and programs available to our members, we realized even some of our directors were not aware of their benefits. I ask you, in your own business, how many times have you heard, “I didn’t know you did that?” I guess our chamber is no different. The need to communicate and educate is a universal, never-ending challenge.
As we begin to create what will become our long-term strategic plan and our goals for 2013, I look forward sharing them with our members and the community. If you have never taken time to really look at your business, I encourage you to take some time away from the office with your staff and look at your business objectively. If you are not sure where to begin, start with a S.W.O.T. analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). This type of analysis is a great tool in helping you view your business in an objective way. Be honest and you might be surprised by how it may give you some direction.

In closing, it’s hard to believe that we have reached the end of another year. I truly enjoy working for the Members in helping to bring together both the businesses and the residents in and around Algonquin and Lake in the Hills. Our two communities are a great place to live, work and play and I welcome your suggestions or comments on how we can better serve our communities. Wishing you, your family, and your business a happy holiday season.
