SleepOut for Shelter expands to Lake County

McHENRY – For the past three years, SleepOut for Shelter has helped raise awareness and much-needed funds for homeless services through McHenry County PADS, a program of Pioneer Center for Human Services.

This year, the event will reach beyond McHenry County through a partnership with PADS Lake County.

“As the number of homeless families and individuals continues to escalate, PADS Lake County is placing greater emphasis on raising communitywide awareness and understanding about the devastating effects and pervasiveness of homelessness in Lake County,” said Sari Rubin, director of development for PADS Lake County.

SleepOut for Shelter will take place May 11.  The McHenry County event will be at Living Waters Church in Crystal Lake, and the Lake County event will be at Carmel High School in Mundelein.

Each site will host a one-hour rally for participants who then will spend the night outside in tents and boxes.

Participants are encouraged to collect pledges in support of their participation. There also will be a “shelter” box-building competition in which individuals can use duct tape, markers, paint and other materials to create a unique shelter.

Money raised by each program will remain within their county.

Cross-county sponsorship opportunities exist and interested parties can call Laurie Bivona, director of marketing for Pioneer Center, at 815-759-7050.
