Athlete of the Week

Tyler Crater

Hampshire, sr.

The Whip-Purs’ 6-foot-1 forward scored 25 points in Tuesday’s 52-38 victory over Marengo, then tossed in 16 points as they defeated Grayslake Central, 62-39, in a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division game Thursday.

Crater leads a team that is 7-1 overall, 1-0 in the division.

Crater’s 25-point game came on a night when Hampshire coach Bob Barnett returned after three weeks of recuperation after suffering two heart attacks. The Whips made it easy on Barnett’s nerves in that game, maintaining control the entire way.

Noteworthy

Age and scoring: Jacobs coach Jim Hinkle bought his team T-shirts last summer that read: “70 – if we score our coach’s age and you score your coach’s age, we win.”

Hinkle, 70, saw his team accomplish that and then some in Saturday’s 77-67 win against Barrington. Jacobs (2-5) has won two of its past three games.

Hot hand: McHenry guard Shane Varvil scored 29 points and hit seven 3-pointers Saturday in the Warriors’ 76-70 overtime loss to LaSalle-Peru.

Charged up: Dundee-Crown is 6-1 and earned the No. 2 seed in the Elgin Holiday Tournament, which starts Wednesday.

Help for Huntley: Huntley senior point guard Tommy Regan returned to the lineup Friday in the Red Raiders’s game at Crystal Lake Central.

Regan suffered a broken finger on his right (nonshooting) hand and missed three games. He scored five points and hit one 3 Friday in a 54-46 loss.
