Another chance

To the Editor:

I am writing to you because I think the firing of Steve Spoden, assistant football coach at Marian Central, is wrong. Up until today, I had never heard of Coach Spoden.

Unfortunately, we live in a world whereby role models are really hard to come by. Professional athletes using illegal drugs, the most famous golfer to ever walk the planet having affairs with multiple women, the former president of the United States having sex with an intern, etc. ...

My deceased father always used to tell me, “Son, in life, you always have to put people on a scale. Measure the good vs. the bad.” Well, in the case of Mr. Spoden, it appears that the good is overwhelming. The impact that this man has had on so many young men, at a point in their lives when they are shaping who they are, and who they become in life, has been uplifting. This man has poured his heart and soul into these kids, and based on feedback from every player interviewed, Mr. Spoden has left every single one of them with positive, perhaps life-changing, thoughts.

I acknowledge that what Mr. Spoden did on Facebook was wrong. I would bet my life that he did not mean this literally! Come on Marian-Central, do the right thing and give this amazing person another chance. The current and future students at Marian Central deserve it.
