Express feelings loudly

To the Editor:

It appears our local taxing bodies and their associated trustees are not listening to us, the taxpayers, and are not reading the local newspapers. The taxing bodies are raising their tax imposed levies on us without any regard to internal fiscal management.

Again this year, they are increasing their budgets and tax levies at a time when our property values and family incomes are dropping, in some cases significantly. There’s protection in numbers and there are a lot of taxing bodies in McHenry County. It’s out of control.

Well, we have to start somewhere, and maybe the other taxing bodies will get the message. I propose we attend the McHenry County College Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. today at the college campus on Route 14. MCC is proposing a 9.9 percent increase in its tax levy, thus directly increasing our property taxes. Why 9.9 percent? It sounds better than 10 percent, apparently.

Increasing its tax levy on us should be the last resort, not the first easy fix. We cannot just increase our household budget by 10 percent with a wave of the hand, and neither should MCC trustees. It’s time to express our feelings about these ridiculous high property-tax bills, and it’s time to express our feelings loudly.
