Missed opportunity

To the Editor:

As I sat watching the news coverage the morning after the shooting in Newtown, Conn., and simultaneously reading the opinion page of the Northwest Herald, I was surprised at the editorial “Celebrate Bill of Rights.”

The day after such a tragedy offers many potential topics, from sympathy to a call of action. Yet the editorial was a rather transparent statement in support of gun ownership.

Please do not think for a minute that it was anything but this. This day was not a day for casual comment or action, nor should we accept that it was preplanned and could not be changed.

With news entities across the country focused on reporting this major story, it is absurd to think that this was anything but a conscientious decision by the Northwest Herald to promote their position on the right to own firearms.

My heart goes out to those families affected by this unnecessary and tragic loss of human life. My condemnation goes to the Northwest Herald, which cannot look past its own selfish interests and which bypassed a clear opportunity to start a conversation on the need for change.
