WONDER LAKE – A 60-year-old man died Monday after suffering a heart attack that caused the truck he was driving to veer off the road and strike a utility pole near Wonder Lake, authorities said.

Alfredo C. Equizabal of Wonder Lake was pronounced dead at Centegra Hospital – McHenry on Monday evening.

He had been driving to a construction job site, authorities said. Reports said he was eastbound on Willow Drive and hit the pole the intersection of West Lake Shore Drive.

Equizabal was wearing a seat belt and the trucks’ airbags did not deploy, authorities said.

There were no injuries or trauma from the impact, said McHenry County Deputy Coroner Paula Gallas. A preliminary autopsy showed Equizabal suffered a heart attack, causing the accident, she said.

Authorities were called to the crash about 4 p.m. Monday, according to a news release. Equizabal was taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry by members of the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District. The investigation is ongoing.
