To the Editor:

Maybe it is time for a good story. With a few volunteers, I operate a small charity, “Farmers Helping the Hungry.” We pick up excess produce and deliver it to the nearest food pantry in McHenry County.

This past summer wasn’t the best, as drought took a toll on production. Even in the face of this, John and Myra Patyk in Richmond gave vegetables almost every week. John Bartman of Marengo planted an entire acre of corn for the needy. Vern Stade of McHenry gave enough squash to feed most of northern Illinois’ needy. And Kirk Cashmore of Harvard gave some of the most beautiful lettuce you have ever seen.
