Fire destroys condo in Richmond

RICHMOND – An early morning fire Monday left a Richmond condominium uninhabitable and caused roughly $40,000 in property damage, fire officials said.

The Richmond Fire Department was called to scene at 2:53 a.m. for a fire at a unit in Silver Trees Condominiums, 5901 Milwaukee Ave. Officials reported seeing smoke billowing from the unit, according to a press release from the Richmond Fire Department.

The department extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes. No one was injured in the accident, but officials rescued and revived a cat from the unit. The fire destroyed the unit and caused smoke damage to two adjoining units, totaling $40,000 in estimated damage.

The American Red Cross is providing temporary housing for the three residents in the affected units. The McHenry County Housing Authority owns the condominium.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials believe it was accidental, the press release states.
