Our view: Don’t lose the spirit of Christmas

It’s the day after Christmas.

The presents are opened. The excitement of the day has passed. This children are occupying their time with their new toys. Boxes are, well, everywhere.

It’s time to at least start thinking about getting your home back into some semblance of order.

Between you and the rest of your family, you’ve received quite a number of new things as gifts from others – new clothes, new toys, new electronic gadgets. You have only so much space for the new things, so you’ll need to discard some of the old. But rather than trashing these older items, consider donating them to a worthy cause.

There are a number of thrift stores in McHenry County that benefit human service organizations and other local nonprofits.

The Salvation Army, Home of the Sparrow, Pioneer Center for Human Services and others operate resale stores that benefit their programming. Goodwill Industries, with locations in Huntley and McHenry, also accepts used items, as does Savers in Crystal Lake.

And there are organizations in town that benefit veterans’ groups that will pick up your discarded items at your home.

Also remember that electronic devices – TVs, mobile phones, DVD players, etc... – should not be discarded in the trash. For environmental reasons, they need to be recycled through special electronic recycling programs. The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County offer the service for a small fee on the second Saturday of each month. There are local businesses throughout the county who will accept your used electronic items for free.

Christmas is over, but that doesn’t mean you should lose the Christmas spirit.

Decide to help others when looking to discard certain items, and keep the environment in mind as well.
