2 cats dead after townhouses catch fire in McHenry

McHENRY – Two cats died, but another was saved during a fire at a McHenry townhouse complex Wednesday night, according to the McHenry Township Fire Protection District.

Crews were called to 534 Legends Lane at around 9 p.m. Wednesday for a reported structure fire, Battalion Chief Mike Majercik said. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames showing from a middle unit of the building.

Neighbors said they heard an explosion followed by large flames and heavy smoke.

“I heard a loud pop,” Jason Sandman said. “It echoed and then burst in to the flames.”

Residents of the four-unit building evacuated their homes prior to the arrival of the fire department.

One person was transported to Centegra Hospital – McHenry for minor smoke inhalation, and was later released, Majercik said. Two cats died during the blaze, but a third cat was saved.

It is believed that the fire started accidentally in the garage of the middle unit, Majercik said.

Damage is estimated at more than $250,000.

The investigation is ongoing.

McHenry Township received assistance from several area departments.
