January trial set for weed trimmer slaying

WHEATON, Ill. — Prosecutors say the trial of a suburban Chicago man accused of beating his father to death with a weed trimmer will center on his mental state at the time of the slaying.

Independent psychological evaluations have found 22-year-old Yashesh Desai of Woodbridge insane during the 2011 slaying.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports that much of the evidence in the case is expected to go undisputed when Desai's bench trial begins Jan. 14 in a DuPage County Court.

Desai is accused of beating his 47-year-old father, Sanjiv, in the head with the heavy end of a weed trimmer as he slept at their home. He has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors say he gave a rambling confession that included references to Godzilla and claims his father owed him money.
