Sessions to help seniors reduce fear of falling

Published: Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake Senior Services Associates will offer “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls” for eight weeks starting Feb. 12.

The sessions will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the agency, 110 W. Woodstock St., Crystal Lake.

A workbook is provided and refreshments will be served.

Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop such fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness and make the risk of falling even greater.

Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. “A Matter of Balance” can improve their quality of life and help keep them independent.

“A Matter of Balance” is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce the risk of falls, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.
