Wonder Lake accident leaves two critically hurt

WONDER LAKE – Two men were in critical condition Friday night after the vehicle they were in went off the road and struck a fence and then a tree.

The accident occurred about 8 p.m. on Barnard Mill Road, east of Stillwell Drive.

Both men suffered multiple injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle, according to the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District. One patient was taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry. The other was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Mike Weber, deputy chief of the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District, said he didn’t know whether alcohol was a factor. It recently had started snowing, he said.

“I’m not sure if the roads were slick with black ice or if they were just going too fast to negotiate the curb,” Weber said.

Barnard Mill Road remained closed for more than an hour Friday night. An investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is ongoing.
