Police: Armed Crystal Lake man arrested after brief standoff

CRYSTAL LAKE – Police arrested a Crystal Lake man Saturday evening after a brief standoff at his home.

According to a new release, officers from the Crystal Lake Police Department were dispatched to a home in the 400 block of Kelly Lane regarding a domestic disturbance.

One of the occupants of the home, Michael H. Walls, 45, was armed with a handgun and had threatened others in the home, police said. Four others in the home barricaded themselves in a room in the home to protect themselves.

When officers arrived at the home, they saw Walls inside with a semi-automatic pistol, police said.

"Unable to safely enter the residence, Crystal Lake patrol officers quickly secured the scene, and contained Mr. Walls within the home, while safeguarding the neighborhood," the news release said.

The police department’s Emergency Services Team then responded to the scene and began talking to Walls, "who eventually exited the home voluntarily, disarmed himself, and surrendered to arrest" about 6:40 p.m., police said. No one in the home was injured.

Walls was charged with domestic battery, unlawful restraint, three counts felony aggravated assault to a peace officer, and misdemeanor aggravated assault.

Bond has been set at $50,000.
