Quoting the Bible
To the Editor:
Re: Strong Values (It’s Your Write, Dec. 26).
God Bless this country as we have one of the most free – at least for now – countries for speaking your mind. And it doesn’t even matter if you are ill-informed in the subject or simply like to spout off about your own preconceived biases.
The Bible is such fun to use when you want to prove your point, as reader Anthony “Bud” March liked to point out that marriage is only between man and woman (Genesis 2:24). I give Mr. March a few other verses to pass out: Exodus 21:7 will guide you as you sell your daughter to be a female slave; Exodus. 21:17 dishes out punishment for cursing out your father or mother (death); and, of course, you can find the old eye-for-eye in the same chapter.
When you are using the Bible to spout off how homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God (Corinthians 6:8-10), you might want to include the part on the thieves, covetous, drunkards and revilers among the others mentioned here. And, of course, some writings on the subject of gay marriage say that you need to draw a line because if gay marriage is allowed, than polygamous relationships won’t be far behind. That kind of ignores the biblical support of polygamous relationships (Genesis 4:19)?
While I could go on for a very long discussion, I will let others weigh in on this topic, since I am certain there are others much more learned on the topic than I am.
