Judge levies record fine over Ill. petroleum tanks
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A Cook County judge has fined a company that owns a closed suburban-Chicago gas station a state record $386,000 for failing to remove underground petroleum tanks from the site.
The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal said Friday the judge imposed the fine against Redevelopment Enterprises Inc. after the company didn't follow a 2011 order from the fire marshal to remove the tanks.
The former gas station in Chicago Heights has been closed since 2008. The three tanks are 37 years old.
