Letters to the Editor

Faulty logic

To the Editor:

Recent letters from the pro-gun people require a response.

To Mr. Patrick Donlea (Jan. 5): So you concede that some weapons can, in fact, be banned (e.g. machine guns)? If so, then why not assault rifles?

As for Mr. Craig Davis (Jan. 3) characterizing a statement made by someone with whom he disagrees as “asinine,” that is about what I would expect from someone who chooses to disregard the actual content of the Bill of Rights. The words “assault weapons” and “handguns” do not appear anywhere in the Second Amendment. Even if you concede that the Second Amendment allows people the right to bear arms (ignoring that whole “militia” thing), nowhere does it say you have the right to bear all arms.

As Mr. Donlea, an NRA member, pointed out, we do ban machine guns, don’t we? Would Mr. Davis repeal that ban? How about bazookas? Personally, I’ve often thought that a nice ICBM or Tiger Tank would look great in my backyard.

Levity aside, the real point here is that some weapons already are prohibited. You can’t therefore argue a Second Amendment issue unless you want to eliminate any exceptions.

Let’s be clear. I am not anti-gun. Own them if you want them. But stop using faulty logic and misinterpretations to make your cases.
