MARENGO – A Rockford man was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when his vehicle rear-ended another Wednesday in Marengo, authorities said.

Robert R. Schwarz, 33, is charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Authorities were called to the 200 block of West Grant Highway about 11:50 p.m. Wednesday and found a utility pole severely damaged and a vehicle in the front yard of a home in the area, according to a news release.

A 23-year-old Prairie Grove woman was traveling west on Grant Highway when her vehicle was struck from behind by Schwarz and rammed into the utility pole, police said.

Schwarz was taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, and the woman was taken to Centegra Hospital – Woodstock.

Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said.

A portion of the highway was closed for more than two hours while utility crews secured fallen power lines.
