MARENGO – A Rockford man was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when his vehicle rear-ended another Wednesday in Marengo, authorities said.

Robert R. Schwarz, 33, is charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Authorities were called to the 200 block of West Grant Highway about 11:50 p.m. Wednesday and found a utility pole severely damaged and a vehicle in the front yard of a home in the area, according to a news release.
