TLC workdays set in Marengo, Johnsburg
WOODSTOCK – The Land Conservancy’s winter workdays will be held this week at two sites in McHenry County.
• The Land of Oz: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. This will be the group’s first volunteer restoration day at this 60-acre wetland complex north of Marengo that TLC bought with grant funds in 2009. Volunteers are needed to clear invasive honeysuckle and buckthorn from under a grove of oak trees that sits at the center of the property. Volunteers should take Kishwaukee Valley Road west from Woodstock to the intersection with Deerpass and Menge roads (Deerpass will be on the left and Menge on the right). Turn right onto Menge and proceed about a half-mile, then look for the other cars parked along the side of the road. The group will hike back from there.
• Dutch Creek Conservation Area: 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. This will be the first restoration day of the year at this natural area with a high-quality creek and remnant oak groves. The group will be clearing buckthorn from along the creek. Visit the Dutch Creek volunteer website for information about the event and the project: www.sites.google.com/site/dutchcreekvolunteers/home. Volunteers should take Johnsburg Road east from Route 31 in Johnsburg, then turn left onto Riverside Drive (after about a half-mile). The volunteers will gather on Riverside Drive in Johnsburg, about a half-mile north of Johnsburg Road.
