To the Editor:
While we did not make the required number of signatures to get the advisory question, “Shall the Cary Park District acquire the Chalet Hills Golf Course?” on the ballot, it wasn’t because of lack of interest. Almost all Cary voters we encountered eagerly signed the petition and, in most cases, were against the purchase. We just didn’t have the time from the decision to try to get the question on the ballot until the deadline to get the number needed. With more time and better weather, I’m sure we would have.
Between the more than 500 signatures against the park district’s purchase submitted to the district board about two months ago and the almost 400 signatures (mostly new) obtained to have the question on the ballot, we did achieve our ultimate goal of bringing the issue to the voters and building awareness.
I’m proud of the interest generated and voters’ willingness to voice their opinions. And I would like to think the Cary Park District Board listened, but would appreciate confirmation that their pursuit of the Chalet Hills Golf Course has ended. We must continue to stay informed. In today’s economy, taxpayers’ voices need to be heard and considered in the decision process.
Thank you to all of the volunteers who have helped, and to Cary voters who took the time to voice their opinions by signing or through emails to the Cary Park District. As mentioned, we met our ultimate goal!
