District 158 puts spotlight on service

ALGONQUIN – Throughout the year, District 158 students and staff participate in a wide variety of service projects to benefit organizations and individuals in their community and around the world.

These projects not only make a big difference for the recipients of these good works, they also cultivate a spirit of giving, civic responsibility, generosity and compassion in the next generation of leaders.

As a means of sharing these good deeds with the community, these items will be featured on the District 158 website at www.district158.org/service-spotlight (About D158 > Service Spotlight):

• Sentiments for Seniors: Collecting and distributing handmade holiday greeting cards to residents of area nursing homes.

• Donations to Toys for Tots: How one kindergarten class made the holidays brighter through a generous donation.

• Holiday Mail for Heroes: Fifth-grade students combine new curriculum with holiday mail program sponsored by the American Red Cross.

• Staff Supports Yellow Ribbons: Collecting and donating care package items to be delivered to troops overseas in a program sponsored by The Yellow Ribbon Organization.

• Students Walk to Honor Soldiers: Seventh-graders collect small items to be sent to the troops and honor soldiers by walking six miles.

• “It’s Hip to Hop”: Students in kindergarten through second grade raise nearly $10,000 in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program.
