Level playing field

To the Editor:

With all the statistics being thrown around about gun control, I do believe there also are statistics not being looked at seriously The FBI reported that hammers killed more people in 2011 than rifles. At least this takes some of the heat off military-style weapons. But misinformed gun control proponents are quick to point out that firearms killed 8,583 people that same year.

So here is my unanswered question. How many of those 8,583 people killed were unarmed? Have they looked at that? I am guessing that in 2011, more than 7,500 unarmed, defenseless, people became victims and were slain. More than 500 unarmed people were shot and killed on the streets of Chicago. We, the citizens, need a level playing field.
