Coroner identifies Woodstock crash victims

WOODSTOCK – Two Harvard residents died Sunday after a vehicle crashed into a bridge pylon along Route 14 in Woodstock, police said.

The residents have been identified as Summers Cooper Jr. and Edith Eddy, according to the McHenry County Coroner's Office. Preliminary autopsies were scheduled for today.

At 1:57 p.m., Woodstock police and fire departments responded to a single-vehicle crash along Route 14, underneath the South Street Bridge, said Woodstock police Sgt. Dennis Leard.

Cooper Jr., 70, and Eddy, 61, in the Chrysler sedan were pronounced dead at the scene. Cooper Jr. was driving at the time of the incident, police said.

The two were wearing seat belts, but Leard said the vehicle’s speed is a “contributing factor” to the police’s ongoing investigation.

Traffic was closed along Route 14 from Dean Street to Kishwaukee Valley Road for three-and-a-half hours. Officials reopened the road to traffic at 5:30 p.m.
