Blazier to headline Everyday Heroes event

Published: Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

CRYSTAL LAKE – This year’s class of Everyday Heroes will be honored with an awards breakfast hosted by the Northwest Herald.

The newspaper’s special section, Everyday Heroes, pays tribute to McHenry County volunteers who go above and beyond to give back to their community.

The 2013 group includes nonprofit leaders, organ donors, community organizers, and those who volunteer their time and energy to assist veterans, the disabled, the poor and the homeless.

The Everyday Heroes profiled this year were nominated by their peers and selected by a Northwest Herald panel of judges.

Bob Blazier, a much-lauded community organizer, will give the keynote address at the awards breakfast. The event will be from 7:15 to 9:15 a.m. March 7 at the Crystal Lake Country Club, 721 Country Club Road, Crystal Lake.

Blazier served as superintendent of Crystal Lake School District 47 and later led the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce.

He has served on more than a dozen local nonprofit boards and led fundraising campaigns for a variety of organizations. He currently serves on the board of nine community organizations and is the business community relations officer at Home State Bank.

Blazier said he plans to talk about the people who have helped him throughout his life, including his wife of 63 years, Rosemary Blazier.

Growing up during the Great Depression when unemployment was at 25 percent, Blazier said many people depended on the kindness and generosity of others to survive.

In his own life, Blazier said a local YMCA leader and high school coach helped him get a scholarship to Western Illinois University.

Without the scholarship, he might not have been able to attend college. Many people helped him in his professional career as well, Blazier said.

Blazier also will address the honorees and emphasize the value of servant leadership and the impact it has on communities.
