Coroner rules Illinois suspect's death a homicide

NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. (AP) — More than a year after a Lake County suspect died after being beaten by police the coroner has ruled the man's death a homicide.

Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd said Tuesday that the November 2011 death of Darrin Hanna was a homicide. A previous coroner had said Hanna's cause of death was undetermined. But Rudd says since then he has received new information and reviewed the case.

One officer from North Chicago was fired and another suspended in April 2012 in connection with the case. Hanna's death sparked protests and led to several investigations.
