Food for thought

To the Editor:

After spending the past few weeks reading, listening, debating and educating myself on gun violence, I have reached an epiphany. The epiphany came when yet another college campus, this one in Texas, became the location of a shooting.

Of all the recent mass shootings, and all the ones I have read about occurring in schools of any kind with the exception of Virginia Tech and the Aurora Colorado shooting, the “legally obtained” guns all came from the same place ... the parents of the shooters.

Now for all you who will start posting comments correcting me, this is only the ones I have read. Columbine, Sandy Hook, a few days ago in New Mexico. So don’t start commenting with corrections. I simply wanted to note a pattern in some of these shootings. I am a believer in the Second amendment, I am a believer that with that amendment comes responsibility and should come reasonable regulation.

So while we all are finding our voice, might we not look at the parents who irresponsibly allowed their weapons into the hands of their children? Parents can now be charged, prosecuted and imprisoned for parties in their homes that result in injury or death when their are minors drinking in their home.

If they survive the gun violence that they help to perpetuate by not adequately securing their legally obtained weapons, should they not be charged, prosecuted and held civilly and criminally responsible?
